The critical decade for climate: unpacking the IPCC Working Group reports

On April 4 2022 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the third and final Working Group report in its sixth assessment cycle, focusing on the mitigation of climate change. It explores the outcomes of different emissions pathways this century, and further defines the parameters of what action is required to keep the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement alive.

The Working Group III (WGIII) report accompanies earlier reports by WGII on adaptation, vulnerability and impacts, and WGI on the physical science basis of climate change.

Ahead of the Bonn climate change conference and negotiations in June, this webinar, featuring contributors from across the report trilogy, will unpick the key findings for this critical decade, explain the latest pathways assessed by the IPCC and place them in the context of near-term climate impacts and adaptation needs.

A panel discussion on the implications for science and society with additional input from leading CONSTRAIN scientists will be followed by a Q&A with audience members.

Panellists include:

Dr Keywan Riahi, Director of the Energy, Climate and Environment Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and Coordinating Lead Author of IPCC AR6 WGIII Chapter 3 Mitigation pathways compatible with long-term goals.

Dr Pauline Dube, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science, University of Botswana, serving in IPCC WGII assessments since the 3rd report and Review Editor of IPCC AR6 WGII Chapter 5 Food, fibre and other ecosystem products.

Dr Alexander Nauels, Senior Science Advisor and Group Lead on global climate projections with Climate Analytics, with several years' experience at the UNFCCC and IPCC science-policy interface.

Dr Amanda Maycock, Associate Professor in Climate Dynamics at the University of Leeds, and Lead Author of IPCC WGI Chapter 4 Future global climate: scenario-based projections and near-term information.
