COMET Webinar: Ian Pierce (University of Oxford). Mountain building: insights from neotectonics
Active tectonics control the growth of mountains and manifest in different ways depending on the geological history and plate motions of different regions. Here different stages of mountain building processes will be shown through the incremental lens of earthquake studies. This tour starts with the comparably simple Nepali Himalayan frontal thrust, moves to the more complicated Kyrgyz Tien Shan, and finishes in the enigmatic Walker Lane belt of California. Each of these regions highlights different challenges in the study of earthquake hazards and tectonics, yet each are united by common principles and can be studied using similar methods.
